DESCRIPTION

High-resolution single-channel and multi-channel geophysical surveys in Cardon III Block were carried out within the framework of the Rafael Urdaneta Offshore Exploration Project to detect and locate drilling hazards within the first 200 meters of subsoil where drilling activities would not be protected from blowouts due to shallow high-pressure gas pockets.

SCOPE OF WORK

A combination of single-beam echo sounder and side-scan sonar was employed to obtain the area’s bathymetry, determine seafloor morphology and detect possible obstacles on the seafloor. Acoustic characterization of the marine subsoil, as well as geological and geotechnical risk assessments, were achieved using pinger and sparker type sub-bottom profilers and high-resolution 2D multichannel seismic. Results obtained allowed interpreting structures such as paleochannels and progradations, as well as detection of risks, such as those related to zones of porous material with possible gas content, among others. The quality of recorded data allowed a precise correlation of information collected by several different instruments. Opportune gas detection guaranteed safe drilling activities at the proposed location without inconveniences.
